I still cannot believe that my neighbour Andrew Masemola is no more. He died last week after a short illness.
Makhi, as we used to call each other, was not just a neighbour but a true friend, brother and drinking partner.
A hard-working family man, Masemola made sure that his wife and family were well taken care of.
He ran a spaza shop to keep his wife busy and many people in Lesedi Park, where he lived, respected him for his innovation.
His death last week took me by surprise because he did not look ill the last time I saw him. The Saturday before I had met him at Seshego Stadium, where we watched a friendly match between the Limpopo department of health and social development against Capricorn Radio.
I was looking forward to the match because Masemola wanted to see DJ Shabba in action. Shabba was his favourite DJ.
Masemola worked in the premier's office in Limpopo, where he was responsible for the management of the phones and cellphones of the office.
He was born in Komatipoort in Mpumalanga on June 19 1969.
Masemola started school at Zamukhuhle Lower Primary in Komatipoort.
He matriculated at Mjokwana High in 1988.
He started working at the Public Service Commission in the former Gazankulu homeland as a messenger in 1991.
Masemola was later moved to the Lebowakgomo government offices, where he worked as a clerk in the registry section before joining the premier's office in 1997.
He is survived by his wife and two children. Masemola will be buried in Giyani tomorrow.
