One of five pupils knocked down yesterday by a car when its driver lost control and dragged them for about 100 metres, has died.

The pupils were from Mawombe High School in Mtubatuba. Grade 11 pupil Wiseman Zungu was the hardest hit and had to be airlifted to Ngwelezane Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The others, S'thembiso Ximba, Lungelo Zikhali, S'phephelo Khowani and S'bonelo Mthethwa, were reported to be in a stable condition.

School principal, Bonga Mkhwanazi described the incident as "truly unfortunate". He said the car, Toyota Conquest, had knocked them down at different spots.

"He started with two of the pupils. The car dragged them a few metres before knocking the other two, who were also dragged for some distance.

"The fifth pupil was about 100 metres away. One is short of words on how to explain this.

"It's unbelievable. Even the driver cannot tell us what exactly happened, no one can," Mkhwanazi said.

He said the incident has left pupils and teachers reeling with shock.

"Pupils are most affected by this and understandably so.

"Seeing your classmate or your schoolmate being dragged by a car for such a distance has been a traumatising experience for them. I hope things will get better with time," he said.

Mkhwanazi said the driver and his passenger suffered slight injuries sustained from the broken windscreen.

Police said the driver would be charged with culpable homicide and reckless driving.
