Disaster centre for Mpumalanga
The Mpumalanga department of local government and housing will build an ultra-modern, multi-million rand disaster management building.
The building will have the most modern equipment and resources to fight veld fires and other disasters.
The proposed three-storey building will cost R48million and will be completed in September next year.
While the department awaits the centre's completion, Mpumalanga authorities are busy transforming the Nelspruit fire station into a temporary disaster management centre.
Department spokesman, Simphiwe Kunene, said the proposed centre would be ready for the 2010 Soccer World Cup. Mpumalanga has been earmarked to host a number of games.
"This centre will be fitted with state-of-the-art equipment and will be able to deal with any disaster in the province," Kunene said.
