I am a Zimbabwean who has been living in Canada for the past eight years and I was excited that South Africa would host the World Cup.

Eight other Zimbabweans living in Canada and I had planned to attend the 2010 Fifa World Cup because it would take place close to home.

I am sorry to say this arrangement is off because we are not prepared to risk our precious lives or be subjected to derogatory remarks by South Africans, especially not in the wake of the ongoing xenophobic attacks in Johannesburg and surrounding areas.

It really is a shame that this situation exists. We will find somewhere else to spend our money.
