Police made three children who had killed two tortoises on a farm near Prince Albert in the Karoo dig graves for the reptiles and pray for forgiveness, news reports said yesterday.

The children, all under 10, were escorted to the scene of the crime and, with their parents present, told to dig graves.

Pieter Koorts discovered the dead 50-year-old leopard tortoises in his orchards.

He said the police were "superb".

"There were tears and a lot of regrets," he said. - Sapa
