The xenophobic attacks gripping the country are a culmination of many things. Politicians are to blame, especially those in government.

The xenophobic attacks gripping the country are a culmination of many things. Politicians are to blame, especially those in government.

They made unreasonable promises of a better life for all, but enriched themselves at the expense of ordinary citizens. They appointed the most incompetent minister to handle the crucial Home Affairs Department. But it is too late to point fingers and what is needed is to find solutions very quickly, before more lives are lost.

If President Thabo Mbeki didn't value loyalty more than people actually doing their work, we wouldn't have these problems. Ministers should be appointed on their strengths, not because they are yes men and yes women.

It is very unfortunate that our African brothers and sisters are caught in a mess which is not of their own making. It is unfortunate that they are made scapegoats.

Our government should create laws which make the country governable where everyone knows their place and role, instead of politicians uttering statements like "learn to live with illegal immigrants".

Such statements don't help the plight of poor, frustrated South Africans who truly believe that immigrants are stealing their jobs.
