Amakhosi have ordered KwaZulu-Natal house of traditional leaders' chairman Mangosuthu Buthelezi not to apologise to the MEC for traditional affairs, Mike Mabuyakhulu.
This comes after an incident on Freedom Day at eMacambini on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast where Buthelezi confronted Mabuyakhulu, accusing him of lying about his name.
Yesterday, at a meeting in Ulundi, scores of amakhosi said there was no need for Buthelezi to extend an apology following insults he allegedly got from the "ANC and its partners".
They agreed that as Mabuyakhulu had taken the matter to his lawyers, it would be useless for Buthelezi to make a public apology.
Buthelezi also revealed that he had received a letter from MEC for finance Zweli Mkhize asking him to apologise.
"The letter in short is suggesting that I should apologise to the MEC for traditional affairs for the exchange of words I had with him at eMacambini," he said.
"And I responded to Mkhize saying I am not going to apologise since MEC Mabuyakhulu has already initiated litigation."
The letter from Mabuyakhulu's lawyers, dated April 29, says "our client demands unconditional public apology within 10 days".
Buthelezi said in eMacambini, he only asked Mabuyakhulu not to lie about his name.
"As he walked past where I was sitting, I got up from my seat and complained to the minister for telling such lies about us.
"I complained about his rudeness in doing so. Subsequent to this incident, I received a letter from his lawyers," he said.
