SuperSport United were yesterday crowned the 2007/08 Absa Premiership champions despite losing 1-2 against a determined Bloemfontein Celtic before an impressive crowd at Seisa Ramabodu Stadium.

It was the first time that Matsatsantsa a Pitori have won the championship. United needed a draw to be home and dry but they found Phunya Selesele in a mean mood on the day.

Celtic's goals were both scored by Moses Spandeel in the first half. The visitors scored through Terefa Fikru.

l Ajax Cape Town fluffed a golden opportunity to wear the crown when they played to a 2-2 draw against Golden Arrows at King Zwelithini Stadium.

Richard Henyekane and Kagiso Senamela scored for the hosts, while Bageta Dikulu and Russel Mwafulirwa netted for the visitors.

United and Ajax will represent South Africa in the African Champions League next year.

l Black Leopards beat Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 at Thohoyandou Stadium but this was not enough, though, to save David Thidiela's side from being axed to the National First Division promotion playoffs.

David Makgale scored the only goal of the match when he struck on the stroke of interval.

The match was watched by former Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns and Bloemfontein Celtic coach Paul Dolezar.

Dolezar told Sowetan before the match that he was invited by Leopards' boss David Thidiela.

Joel Masuthu was on the bench, while head coach Sheppard Murape was sitting close to Dolezar on the grandstands.

Amakhosi lost their first-choice goalie Itumeleng Khune early in the match after he was sent off for holding the ball outside the box in the 17th minute.

Chiefs sacrificed winger Arthur Zwane when they brought on the almost-forgotten Emile Baron between the poles.

l Orlando Pirates ended the season with a bang by finishing well inside the season top eight where there is a minimum prize of R1 million.

This was after hammering AmaZulu 4-1 in a one-sided match played at Johannesburg Stadium to end the season on a high. It was a question of only a point separating Pirates and Lamontville Golden Arrows, who played to a 2-2 draw against the Urban Warriors.

Veteran Gilbert Mushangazhike opened the floodgates in the 26th minute. Rudzani Ramudzuli increased the lead 10 minutes later to give them a 2-0 lead at interval.

Teko Modise, one of the favourites to walk away with the Player of the Season, converted a penalty in the 73rd minute.

In-form Tlou Segolela grabbed the fourth goal in the 82nd minute before Sanele Majola pulled one back for Usuthu in the 88th minute.

lIn Atteridgeville, Free State Stars bade their Zambian coach Kinnah Phiri a good send-off in the form of a 4-0 pasting over Mamelodi Sundowns at Super Stadium.

Kingston Nkatha scored a brace for Ea lla koto in the second and 17th minutes, with another goal coming from Diyo Sibisi in the 31st minute. Sipho Nkosi inflicted more pain on The Brazilians with a 57th minute goal.

The match was watched by new Bafana Bafana coach Joel Santana with his two assistants Pitso Mosimane and Jairo Leal.

lA 39th minute goal by Erwin Isaacs gave Major David Bright's Santos a 1-0 win over Platinum Stars at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town.

Isaacs, who scored his 12th league goal of the season, received a good pass from Thomrick October. The People's Team have qualified for the Confederations Cup.

lIn Rustenburg, Moroka Swallows and Bidvest Wits drew 0-0 at Olympia Park Stadium.

lOn-form Serge Djiehoua scored from the penalty spot in the 91st minute to help Thanda Royal Zulu beat Jomo Cosmos 1-0 at Mpumalanga Stadium.
