More high school pupils are due to enter the Smart Young Mindz Challenge after the closing date was postponed by more than a month.
The original closing date of May 28 has now been extended to July 22.
It was decided to extend the date to assist schools that would not have been ready.
The judges will now have to deal with far more than the 101 entries that have been received so far.
A total of R100000 is up for grabs to teams and schools coming in first. A whopping R50000 will go to the winning team, with each member bagging R8000 plus a R1000 cellphone. Their school will get R5000.
Members of the second winning team will get R4000 each plus a cellphone worth R1000. Their school will get R5000.
For the third winning team, each person will get R2000 plus a cellphone worth R1000 and their school will get R5000.
Smart Young Mindz, which is open to Gauteng high schools, is a corporate social investment and responsibility partnership programme of Blue IQ, the Gauteng Education Department and Sowetan.
It seeks to stimulate young people's interest and competitive participation, performance and excellence in maths, physical science, engineering, technology, entrepreneurship and innovation.
Teams submit smart business ideas. They must investigate problems in their communities and generate ideas for products or services that will fill a gap in their local markets by:
lDeveloping a slang dictionary that incorporates at least 100 words and sayings, with meanings in English;
lHighlighting Gauteng's reputation as one of the most politically and culturally unique regions in the country;
l Comming up with innovate alternative power sources to provide relief for people who cannot afford electricity, gas and solar energy; and
lProviding water recycling solutions for residential areas where pollution is a challenges.
