Soccer show nears milestone

There's a saying that life begins at 40.

Well that is for people, but for television sports programmes reaching your 400th episode could be considered a milestone.

The African Soccer Television show goes into this weekend with one more show to go before its 400th, which will crown it as one of the longest running sports shows on SABC Sports.

"It's exciting and we are looking forward to it. We will arrange a nice package to celebrate the historic moment," said executive producer Aubrey "Young Lion" Tau yesterday.

Not that this weekend's package on SABC1 Sports' Laduma programme will be any less entertaining in highlighting the best action from games played around the continent last week.

The Moroccan Cup quarterfinals were played and two of those games are featured, with Maghrib Atletico Tetouan edging Difaa Hassani Jdidi 1-0 while KAC de Kenitra and favourites FAR Rabat played to a 0-0 stalemate after 120 minutes with Rabat finally going through 11-10 after a marathon penalty session.

There were goals galore last weekend as the net was rattled in a Fifa U-17 Women's World Cup qualifier in which Ghana routed DRC 8-0.

In CAF's new continental competition, the 2008 African Nations Championship, Ghana didn't raise much of a sweat in a 2-0 victory over Togo. In the 2008 CAF Champions League round of 16 second leg match, Olympique de Khouribga and Asec Mimosas played to a 1-1 stalemate.
