The gunning down of IFP councillor Peter Nxele has robbed the country of a stalwart and an open-minded politician.

Nxele, 73, was ambushed at his home on Tuesday night by three unknown assailants. They shot him four times, killing him on the scene.

Those who knew and worked with Nxele this week described him as a very open-minded person.

Councillors from all political parties in KwaZulu-Natal said Nxele was a politician above politics.

They said he was passionate about serving the people, regardless of their political affiliation.

Nxele was born on November 30 1935 at Amanzamnyama in Umthunzini, near Empangeni. He began his early education at Amanzamnyama Primary School before enrolling at the Eshowe College of Education, where he obtained his Teacher's Diploma.

After his teaching job in Mandeni, he switched careers when he joined Sappi, a paper-manufacturer. He later moved to Klaarwater, where he worked at Kwasphala.

He became interested in politics and joined the IFP in his youth.

He worked for the Dundee municipality where he later became a councillor representing the IFP until his death. He was married to Esther Mlungutheni Khanyile, who died in 1998. They had three children.

Nxele's death on May 12 has robbed people of their servant. He will be buried tomorrow in Dundee.
