The Mpumalanga department of culture, sports and recreation has added 52 new schools in their school sports Siyadlala mass participation programme.
Last year the programme benefited 105 schools, with targeted age groups being the Under-11s, U-12s and U-13s at primary schools and under-14s, U-16s and U-18s at secondary schools.
Jabu Mahlangu, MEC for culture, sports and recreation, said there are 27720 pupils taking part in the programme and receiving playing attire and sports equipment.
"Soccer, netball, volleyball, rugby, cricket and athletics are played in these schools," Mahlangu said. "However, chess is there mainly to cater for blind learners in Learners with Special Educational Needs (LSEN) schools.
"These schools were further provided with sport equipment for all the codes."
"The intentions of this programme are to mobilize our young people to host and participate in the 2010 World Cup, to promote national pride and unity, and build values of non-racism, non-sexism... and tolerance."
