Soccer legend Philemon "Chippa" Masinga yesterday applauded the Local Organising Committee for fusing activities celebrating South Africa's winning of the right to host the 2010 World Cup, with development projects.

Masinga was speaking to Sowetan at Mogwase Stadium in North West at the fourth anniversary cele- brations of Fifa awarding the 2010 World Cup to South Africa on May 15 2004.

As part of the celebrations at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium, the LOC organised coaching clinics for about 100 boys and girls from the four districts in North West.

Dignitaries present included Danny Jordaan, the LOC chief executive, and Edna Molewa, the North West premier.

Besides Masinga, the other World Cup ambassadors who conducted the clinics were his former Bafana Bafana teammate Mark Fish and former Banyana Banyana captain Desiree "Dumpy" Ellis.

The trio took the enthusiastic youngsters through the basics of soccer, from passing, ball control, heading and target shooting to chest trapping. The youngsters were given World Cup T-shirts and shorts by the LOC.

"Development is the only key to success for any serious country, that is why it is important for us to channel more funds into grassroots soccer. That will also help us to produce quality players for Bafana," said Masinga.
