Johannesburg mayor Amos Masondo has been nominated for the World Mayoral Award for the second time in a row.

Masondo's spokesman, Nkhesani Makhubela, said Masondo was honoured to be among the finalists for this year's award.

"This is a major confidence boost for the city of Johannesburg," Makhubela said.

Of the 50 nominees three are from Africa and include Cape Town mayor Helen Zille and Omar El Bahraoui of Rabat in Morocco.

The New York-based World Mayor Project, which is behind the competition, is run by an international network of professionals to promote strong, prosperous cities and good government.
