There was electricity in the air as cars lined 15th Road in Randjespark, Midrand, on Tuesday as people made their way to experience the largest auction of top brand generators at Aucor's head office.

Following a nationwide plea on behalf of Eskom to cut back on everyday power usage, Aucor's generator auction saw a number of households and businesses lowering their daily capacity demand, effectively reducing the strain on the suppliers' over-fraught power grid.

Excitement filled the warehouse as about 200 credited buyers bid eagerly to get their hands on one of the 295 Cat, Deutz and Cummins powered generators on offer. The outputs of the machines ranged from small 20 KVAs sufficient to power homes, to large 500 KVAs which have industrial applications.

As generators are seen as the most effective means of protection against Eskom's scheduled power outages, bidders readily raised their bid cards in response to Aucor chairman Eddie Winterstein's rhythmic calling.

When contacted after the auction, Matthew Henderson, managing director of the engineering division at Aucor, commented: "I was satisfied with the outcome of the auction, especially since everyone who registered for the auction managed to acquire one of the top brand generators."
