Mama Angel played host to a group of senior citizens on a tour of Soweto and Alexandra.

The tour was a Heritage Day-Mother's Day outing for residents of the De Wetshof Retirement Centre in Kensington.

They travelled in a convoy of top-of-the-range Audis, with a heavy police escort. Everyone was charmed by the group and wanted to take a granny home.

"The elderly are very special," said Solomon Mogale of Audi's corporate sales department. "If we do not look after them it means South Africa is not a worthwhile country.

"The seniors are the ones who worked hard to give us our future and we have to be grateful for that.

"Some people consult their parents when buying important things such as a car. We hope the grannies and grandpas will say to their children: 'Buy the Q7'," joked Mogale.

Mama Angel treated them to lunch at Sakhumzi's Restaurant in Orlando West, Soweto, a stone's throw from the Nelson Mandela Museum.

Their social worker, Lerato Ndlovu, said the group wanted to know more about the heritage sites and to learn about life outside the suburbs.

"We have a social club that helps break the ice among residents," Ndlovu said. "We do not want them to be isolated.

"They can learn and understand a bit about their various backgrounds while enjoying themselves."

Patricia Peggy Moetapele, former actress and film star of films such as Di Millioni TsaKiriri, said the outing was a success because it gave retired people an opportunity to socialise.

"We went to Itlhokomeleng Old Age Home in Alexandra and we were also welcome at the Nelson Mandela Foundation," Moetapele said. "After lunch we will visit the museum and other sites. We are truly making friends."

Said Maureen Abrahms and her new friend Koitie Pratt: "It is a lovely day. This is a wonderful pre-Mother's Day gift."
