The national secretary of the Young Communists League, Buti Manamela, has urged President Thabo Mbeki to investigate and stop the disappearance, rape and killings of children in the Modimolle area of Limpopo.

The league said eight children were raped and murdered and three had gone missing since 2004. The bodies of the dead children were found in mountains near Modimolle.

Some of those who were found were discovered to have been raped before being killed.

In an open letter to Mbeki, Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula and Justice Minister Brigitte Mabandla, Manamela, who is from the area, related the plight of ongoing disappearances and the recent attempted rape of a 12-year-old child and her mother.

He said the matter should be pursued in the same vigour and commitment as the case of murdered white student Leigh Matthews so as "to accord the families space to find closure on this mysterious disappearance of their children".

Limpopo police spokesman Senior Superintendent Motlafela Mojapelo said yesterday that the search for the suspects was still on.
