Limpopo police have appealed to hospitals and mortuaries to inform them about anyone brought to these establishments with gunshot wounds.

This follows an incident in which a shootout between police and 30 ATM bombers ensued in Moletlane, Zebediela, outside Polokwane, at about 2am on Tuesday.

Police spokesman Senior Superintendent Motlafela Mojapelo said police were patrolling and became suspicious when they spotted a number of vehicles.

Shortly afterwards they heard a bang. A Nedbank ATM had been blasted.

Mojapelo said shots were fired at them when they went to investigate. They returned fire.

"We believe that the suspects used high-calibre firearms such as AK-47 and R4 rifles and that they were travelling in about five cars," said Mojapelo.

He said there were indications that some of the men were wounded or even killed.

"One man was shot while standing next to the ATM and his accomplices dragged him away. He was bleeding profusely," Mojapelo said.

The suspects fled without taking anything, he said.

A car used by the gang was found abandoned on a road between Marble Hall and Elandskraal. It had been stolen in Johannesburg.

"We will not tolerate these types of incidents and have declared war on suspects trying to blow up ATMs. We will leave no stone unturned to bring the perpetrators to book," Mojapelo said.

Anyone with information has been asked to please call Senior Superintendent Nelson Mabotja on 082-451-7161 or Superintendent Shuffle Nengwekhulu on 082-523-3679.
