The public broadcaster has begun with preparations for the 2010 World Cup by starting a campaign to educate the nation on the importance of the tournament.

The SABC, through its partnership with the Local Organising Committee, is developing programmes to promote mass buy-in and support for the World Cup.

Mvuso Mbebe, SABC content enterprises group executive, said they wanted to create a sense of excitement and preparedness in the countdown to 2010.

The campaign will target other countries on the continent in support of South Africa's pledge to make it an African World Cup.

Mbebe said the public broadcaster was developing sports documentary series on the evolution of South African football, among other plans.
