Talking about community involvement, we are saddened that this crucial co-existence network failed to timeously intervene in an abusive relationship that ended tragically last weekend.

Talking about community involvement, we are saddened that this crucial co-existence network failed to timeously intervene in an abusive relationship that ended tragically last weekend.

This was in the case of Soweto taximan Patrick Mocumi, who burnt his daughters and himself to death in his minibus taxi.

This followed an abusive relationship with his girlfriend and the mother of the two children.

Abusive relationships seldom happen without family and neighbours noticing signs.

Sadly children continue to be pawns in abusive relationships with alarming frequency, dying at the hand of parents responsible for their wellbeing.

A solution perhaps lies in the government incorporating counselling units into its multipurpose centres in the townships to tackle violent marital disputes.
