The gunning down of IFP councillor Peter Nxele in Dundee, northern KwaZulu-Natal, on Monday night has shocked the local community.
Nxele, 73, was ambushed after parking his car at his home in the Mphathi area.
He was returning from a caucus meeting when he was shot four times in the chest at close range.
Police spokesman Shooz Magudulela said Nxele was off-loading goods from his car when three armed men opened fire on him, killing him instantly.
"At this stage we are still looking for motive, but nothing was taken after the shooting," Magudulela said.
IFP national chairman Zanele Magwaza-Msibi said the party mourned the death of Nxele, who was one of the longest serving members of the party.
She said she was shocked that the killing comes as political parties were getting ready for elections.
"We are heading towards elections and when these things happen we wonder what will happen by the time we reach the elections date.
"Nxele was known for his zeal in fighting corruption.
"I have been reliably informed that Nxele had a meeting with the Endumeni municipal manager last week to ask for a forensic audit of the municipality's spending when it was under the control of the ANC," Magwaza-Msibi said.
She said no political motive was suspected yet in the attack.
"We urge the police to leave no stone unturned in getting to the bottom of the murder because Nxele was a decent man," Magwaza-Msibi said.
"Even our president, Mangosuthu Buthelezi, is shocked because he knew him as one of the longest serving members of the party.
"I hope his death encourages us to soldier on."
ANC councillor Tony Malunga described Nxele's killing as "shocking".
"He was well respected, open and frank," Malunga said. "When something was wrong he spoke out without taking political sides.
"We hope the community will help the police to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book."
