Pirates, Stars fight for scraps

It will be a dog eat dog battle when Free State Stars welcome staggering Orlando Pirates at Goble Park in Bohlokong today at 3pm.

The two clubs are desperate for maximum points for different reasons as the Absa Premiership has reached a more difficult and yet exciting hurdle.

With the championship title out of reach for both teams, their battle is to finish inside the R1 million bracket.

Following the cancellation of the yearly top eight knockout competition, clubs finishing in that bracket are guaranteed a minimum of R1 million.

Ea Lla Koto are leaving nothing to chance, saying they need a win today to secure R1 million plus for themselves.

Stars seem to have recovered their winning form, which should be a worry for Owen da Gama, Pirates' coach.

The Free State outfit have, through captain Duncan Lechesa, promised a memorable farewell to outgoing Malawian coach Kinnah Phiri.

Phiri has been recalled by the Football Association of Malawi to turn the fortunes of The Flames around in preparation for the 2010 World Cup.

The irony of this clash is that in December the two clubs were among strong candidates to walk away with the R10 million first prize for the league title.

Knowing Bucs' leadership, a good number of players are likely to pay dearly for the fall from grace, with some massive transfers. The technical staff must be equally worried and praying for wins in their last two matches, or else...

Pirates's Teko Modise (toe injury) is a doubtful stater, but Da Gama is still spoilt for choice if the contender for Player of the Year is ruled out this morning.

Stars will be without the suspended Chintu Kampamba, but Phiri will move defender James Matola to the middle of the park.
