Kids must be taken care of

A child is raised by a village, so goes the age-old saying.

A child is raised by a village, so goes the age-old saying.

The underlying message of the expression is the wisdom that, by extension, a problem affecting a family is naturally also a concern of the local community.

The benefits of communal existence and networks are amply exemplified by the saga of the alleged abuse of a 4-year-old girl by her father - a kwaito musician.

Through community vigilance and intervention, the child's plight became public knowledge and ultimately led to a criminal case being opened against Mgarimbe.

This is commendable since by so doing the neglected child was saved from further abuse. The father will now have to answer to charges that the child was allegedly being tortured and underfed.

While the suspect will remain innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, we nonetheless have an obligation to condemn any person who subjects children to such abuse.

It is inhuman.

Children are innocent souls that have to be raised and nurtured with care, respect and dignity. They are a special gift from God.

We hope the police will not fail this little girl but will instead investigate the matter to ensure the successful prosecution of the case before court.
