BSA boss strikes back

Bongani "Mr Fix-It" Khumalo says it is strange that while Boxing SA was awaiting feedback from a meeting of the National Promoters Association (NPA) last weekend, a press statement has been issued behind their backs.

The NPA was quoted yesterday calling on Khumalo to resign with immediate effect as the chief executive of Boxing SA because he was arrogant and insensitive to issues affecting promoters, especially with the "increase" in licence fees.

Khumalo, who took office last June, proposed that promoters staging international and world title fights pay R5 000 and a deposit of R70 000; those staging national title fights pay R3 000 and a deposit of R30 000; while development promoters pay R2000 and a deposit of R10000.

Director of operations Loyiso Mtya announced last month that promoters would need to renew their licences before the end of this month. NPA chairman Mzimase Mnguni was quoted saying promoters would not pay the deposits, which included a R50 administrative fee demanded by BSA.

But Khumalo vehemently denied the perception that he was arrogant, divisive and untrustworthy.

"This is not only unfortunate but also baseless," said Khumalo.

"The National Promoters Association is free to advocate for what it is worth. The stance of licensing fees purported to have adopted by some promoters who were present at this meeting is not only surprising but also indicative of the lack of good faith consultation.

"All licensing requirements communicated by BSA to its licensees remain unchanged. Also the extended deadline of May 31 is final."
