Joyce Nkwinika, an ANC chief whip in the Greater Tzaneen municipality in Limpopo, has allegedly been awarded a contract to clean municipal buildings at a cost of more than R80000 a month.
Nkwinika was allegedly given the contract as early as 2005.
She was appointed chief whip in the municipality after the municipal elections in 2006.
But her contract for cleaning the buildings was extended to other buildings in the municipality despite her appointment as chief whip.
According to documents in Sowetan's possession, VilaVila construction, the company owned by Nkwinika, had been claiming R80344 a month.
The company was awarded a contract to clean municipal buildings in Lenyenye, Bolobedu, Letsitele and Haenertzburg.
Nkwinika, as a government official, is not supposed to get any contracts from the municipality in terms of the guidelines of the municipal finance management act.
Sources at the municipality said it was standard practice for municipal officials to channel contracts to their own companies.
Municipal manager Mabakane Mangena yesterday confirmed that Nkwinika's company was rendering services to the municipality.
