Several streets in Pretoria's city centre will be closed today as a ceremony to award former president Nelson Mandela, pictured, the Freedom of the City will take place on Church Square.

Several streets in Pretoria's city centre will be closed today as a ceremony to award former president Nelson Mandela, pictured, the Freedom of the City will take place on Church Square.

Tshwane mayor Gwen Ramokgopa will confer the city's greatest honour on Mandela at a private venue but the ceremony will be broadcast live to the public on Church Square.

A large stage, tents and other public venues are being erected at the square where events to celebrate the award to Mandela will kick off at 11am. These events include a parade by Metro police, police and Tshwane emergency services and performances by various musicians. Paul Kruger Street from Vermeulen to Minnaar Streets and all streets leading to Church Square, including the corners of Bosman and Church streets, Vermeulen and Paul Kruger streets, Andries and Church streets, Pretorius Street and Bureau Lane and Pretorius and Paul Kruger streets will be closed. - Sapa
