A 2007 survey conducted by the International Council of Nurses revealed what many have always suspected - that nurses do love their job but not their working environment.

Their common call to those in charge of healthcare systems is that they need "to do a better job at creating environments where nurses and all health professionals are enabled to do well what they do best - provide quality care to patients".

Notably, the finding came amid growing public despair at deteriorating nursing standards, mostly in public healthcare institutions and less in the private sector.

Factors identified as contributing to bad working conditions include long working hours, tending to more patients than required by international benchmarks and poor pay.

Loving their job therefore meant little in a scenario where adverse working conditions resulted in a drop in healthcare levels.

But, despite all the negativity, the future of one of the oldest professions in the world remains bright. Nurses throughout the world are still committed to the craft despite daunting challenges.

Such indomitable spirit and dedication is a fitting tribute to Florence Nightingale, the founder of nursing.

In celebration of International Nurses Day yesterday, we urge them to keep the lamp burning.
