Eskom yesterday briefed the government on plans regarding the electricity crisis.
Following a special Joint Presidential Working Group meeting which was attended by President Thabo Mbeki, Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka and several cabinet ministers at the Union Buildings, Eskom chief executive officer Jacob Maroga presented the company's plan for unplanned outages and coal energy recovery.
Maroga also tabled a building programme and progress made in electricity demand reduction. It was revealed that the previously mothballed Camden, Grootvlei and Komati power stations were being upgraded to be reopened.
The Presidency said progress had been made in electricity savings with April seeing savings of up to 7percent.
"The meeting was informed that load shedding had been suspended on the basis of progress towards meeting the 10percent savings target and reviewing the most effective approach in achieving sustained savings."
