The SABC and the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association have awarded three African documentary filmmakers prestigious scholarships worth more than R450000 to study documentary film-making at the Thomson Foundation in Cardiff, Wales.
The scholarships were given at the Made In Africa documentary workshop at the weekend.
The workshop preceded an international television conference, Input 2008, which began on Sunday and ends on Saturday.
Taryn Mackay, spokesman for Input 2008, said that during the workshop the three participants were chosen from more than 70 delegates to attend the course in Wales later this year.
The winners are Mayenzeke Baza of Port Elizabeth, Tracey-Lee Dearham of Cape Town and Makhela Phululu of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Dearham said her pitch for a documentary about soccer in the townships would help people forget their socio-economic problems.
Baza said he hoped to learn film skills in Cardiff so that he could "invest back in South Africa'.
