SuperSport United have kept their Absa Premiership title hopes alive by beating Moroka Swallows 4-2 in a action-packed showdown at the Super Stadium on Saturday night.

SuperSport United have kept their Absa Premiership title hopes alive by beating Moroka Swallows 4-2 in a action-packed showdown at the Super Stadium on Saturday night.

Katlego Mashego scored all four of his team's goals as the Pretoria side regained top spot in the league standings, just one point ahead of Ajax Cape Town.

Swallows started the game the better of the two sides, and Cecil Oerson should have put the Birds ahead in the 3rd minute but his header went wide.

SuperSport soon found their rhythm and midfielder Daine Klate created Matsatsantsa a Pitori's first real chance of the match in the 12th minute but blasted over the bar.

Swallows defender James Mayinga came close to scoring three minutes later, but his long-range effort went just wide of Andre Arendse's goal. Arendse was called into action in the 18th minute and pulled off an acrobatic one-handed save to keep out a rasping shot from Oerson.

The Dube Birds kept up the pressure on the home side with Sandile Ndlovu forcing a save from Arendse midway through the first half while Evans Gwekwerere will be kicking himself for missing a sitter with just the keeper to beat in the 27th minute.

SuperSport were on the back foot for the remainder of the half and both teams came out attacking in the second half. Greg Etafia did well to keep out SuperSport striker Fikru Tefera's shot in the 53rd minute.

Swallows opened the scoring on the hour mark when Ndlovu raced to meet a weighted pass from Japhet Zwane at the far post and slotted past Arendse.

SuperSport reacted immediately and equalised a minute later through a well-struck shot by Mashego that gave Etafia no chance, before Swallows regained the lead in the 66th minute when Mark Haskins latched on to a flick from Gwekwerere and buried the ball in the SuperSport goal.

Swallows fans had their celebrations cut short when SuperSport were awarded a dubious penalty after Edward Malinga was adjudged to have brought down Mashego in the penalty area.

Mashego stepped up and calmly slotted the ball past Etafia to level matters for the title hopefuls.

Mashego then capitalised on a lapse of concentration by Swallows to get behind the defence and complete his hat trick in the 70th minute and scored his fourth deep into injury time. - PSL website
