Speakers at the funeral of the Limpopo pensioner shot dead during a botched heist at a Moutse pension payout point last week condemned the incident and called on the police to arrest those responsible.
Jim Mogoru, 75, of Walkraal A, Dennilton, Moutse, a staunch member of the Zion Christian Church, was one of four people killed during the bloody attempted robbery last week.
The old man, described as peace-loving by mourners, was a volunteer queue marshal at the Walkraal pension payout point for many years.
He was buried at the local cemetery on Saturday.
The shootout between security guards and the robbers also claimed the lives of Fikile Madonsela, a Sonqoba security guard, and two of the criminals.
Two other people were wounded and were still in hospital at the weekend.
Sekhukhune municipality mayor Dickson Namane Masemola, whose municipality paid for all funeral expenses and donated an additional R10000 to the family, said Mogoru "did not deserve to die the way he did".
He urged the police to bring those responsible for the evil deed to book.
Kgosi EM Mathebe of Moutse, speaking after the funeral, condemned criminal activity in his area, saying "this should stop".
He, too, called on the police to do their best to arrest the thugs, adding that the killing of innocent people was "unacceptable".
Local station commissioner Director Daniel Moenyana called on locals to ensure that the incident "did not happen again by alerting the police about every suspicious activity in the area".
No arrests have been made in the case.
