Expelled councillors to go to court

Six expelled IFP councillors of the Okhahlamba municipality in KwaZulu-Natal say they are now waiting for a court ruling on the next step to be taken after the failure of their council to sit on Friday.

The councillors were expelled after they passed a vote of no confidence in former colleague and mayor Vikizitha Mlothswa.

Mlotshwa went to court to challenge his ousting. The court reinstated him as mayor - until a full council meeting was held and a resolution taken.

Last week a petition was signed by the 16 councillors to hold a council sitting to decide whether Mlotshwa remained mayor - but the meeting failed to take place.

Louis Ngwenya, one of expelled councillors, said they were not given any reason for this.

"It's now up to the courts to decide on the next step," he said. - Canaan Mdletshe
