A popular kwaito musician has been arrested after the police charged that they found an abused four-year-old girl in his townhouse last night.

Honeydew police acted after whistleblowers living in the same complex reported they had seen the girl on the balcony outside the townhouse looking sad and crying.

Police opened a charge of child abuse last night.

The singer and his girlfriend have been accused by their neighbours of beating and starving the girl - who it is believed is the couple's first-born child.

His neighbour said the neglected child had already started to show withdrawal symptoms and her hair was so thin that "malnutrition was written all over her face".

"She was always dirty," the neighbour told Sowetan.

"Sometimes you hear her crying and then there is this big bang and the next thing it is quiet."

Some of the workers at the complex said the little girl had even asked for food from them on several occasions.

Sowetan visited the complex on Friday and found the girl on the balcony.

Sowetan staffers knocked on the door for about 10 minutes but no one opened. The singer appeared only when he thought the newspaper crew had left.

He then denied the existence of the little girl in his house.

"I don't know what you are talking about. I don't have three children. I have two and my oldest is a boy not a girl."

He denied abusing the child.

West Rand spokesman Siphiwe Ndlovu said the child would be taken to a place of safety.
