Newly elected ANC Youth League president Julius Malema has renewed the call to ban alcohol on Sundays and says South Africa should declare an alcohol-free day at least once a week.

Malema was speaking at an anti-crime campaign march in Sebokeng on Friday.

He said alcohol should not be sold and consumed on Sundays.

"Taverns, shebeens and bottle-stores should not operate on Sundays," Malema said.

He was echoing a controversial call made earlier by Fikile Mbalula, his predecessor.

Malema said that some outlets were selling liquor to under-aged children.

"At least once a week South Africa should have a sober day. Alcohol contributes to crime," he said.
