My sister, Lindiwe Irene Mdlalose, died on Monday. She would have turned 49 on June 4.

Though her health had deteriorated badly since 2006, the death of this early childhood development activist has shocked her family and friends.

Lindiwe succumbed to complications caused by diabetes and high blood pressure.

Aunty, as she was known, was a big girl in the true sense of the word. She brooked no nonsense from anyone. She spoke her mind, even if it meant rubbing people up the wrong way.

She was a bully, church choir member, sangoma, creche owner and shebeen queen but, I hasten to add, she had a heart as big as the ocean - very loving and generous to a fault.

Lindiwe is survived by siblings Khehla and Queen, children Mbali and Nhlanhla.

She will be buried tomorrow. The funeral service starts at 9am at 468 Poswayo Street, Kagiso 1. The cortege leaves for Kagiso cemetery at 10am. - Khehla Mdlalose
