The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) in KwaZulu-Natal is angry over an incident in which a policeman was critically wounded when a robber opened fire on police officers.

The police were trying to persuade the robber to turn himself in on Tuesday night.

Nhlakanipho Nogwaza, deputy secretary of the union in KwaZulu-Natal, said the police found themselves in a very unfortunate situation.

He said the incident was an indication that section 49, which gives police powers to use excessive force when they felt their lives were in danger, was not enough.

He said they would have to put more pressure on the government about illegal firearms.

"Criminals resort to violence because they don't care about law and order," Nogwaza said.

Police spokesman Inspector Michael Read said the police had received a tip-off about the alleged robber's whereabouts in the Burlington informal settlement in the Queensmead industrial area, outside Chatsworth.

When the man was cornered, he refused to turn himself in and opened fire. He wounded an officer and was shot dead by another.
