A cellphone video showing two pupils having steamy sex inside a school toilet at Tongaat Secondary School has been circulated among pupils and has led to the suspension of the two "lovemakers".

The incident took place two weeks ago and the pupils were suspended a few days later when teachers at the school saw the footage.

But pupils at the school said "sex in the toilet" was common but this was the first time that the culprits had been caught red-handed and that the school had taken action.

The Grade 10 girl and Grade 12 boy arrived at school yesterday for a disciplinary hearing. The girl was accompanied by her mother but the boy came alone, saying his grandmother was too sick to attend.

The school tribunal, consisting of the principal, an education department representative and a school governing body representative, will decide at a later date on whether the pupils should be reinstated.

The suspended pupils, who cannot be named, are known to Sowetan. They were caught having sex inside the boy's toilet by another pupil.

The pupil who shot the video is not known. Sowetan is in possession of the video.

"Learners have been sending the evil footage among each other for days before teachers got to know about it," said one pupil.

Sowetan spoke to the Grade 12 pupil involved in the incident.

"I am very worried that I may not write my matric exams. I am sorry that this happened in school and I am anxious to go back to class," he said.

The principal was locked in meetings and could not talk to the press yesterday.

Provincial education spokesman Mbali Thusi condemned the incident and urged parents to advise their children accordingly at home.
