A man who was found in possession of R4200 in counterfeit notes appeared in the Boschfontein court on Tuesday on charges of fraud.

Petrus Nkosi, 35, of Matsamo in Mpumalanga was granted R2000 bail and the case was postponed to June 10.

Nkosi was caught by taxi drivers who handed him over to the police on Monday in Matsamo plaza.

Constable Nompilo Qwabe said Nkosi was seen sitting at the taxi rank from early Monday morning.

She said Nkosi went to the Vodacom container near the rank and bought airtime vouchers.

"The owner of the container became suspicious of the notes given to her and ordered Nkosi to return the vouchers," Qwabe said.

"Nkosi became aggressive and an argument ensued. Taxi drivers intervened and assaulted him.

"They stopped a passing police van and the police arrested him after finding counterfeit notes on him."
