The IFP has expelled its six councillors in the Okhahlamba municipality in Bergville in the KwaZuluNatal Midlands.
The councillors were accused of "colluding" with the ANC in ousting IFP mayor Vikizitha Mlotshwa.
The six were found guilty of signing a petition siding with the ANC to oust Mlotshwa and of contravening the IFP's constitution.
Bhekani Hlongwane, Nomakhosi Mahlobo, Fikile Mazibuko, Thobile Mpembe and Clement Mabizela have vowed to go to the highest court to reverse the decision.
They were suspended three weeks ago when Mlotshwa was ousted after his IFP colleagues moved a motion of no confidence against him.
They then elected a new mayor, Bhekani Hlongwane, a fellow IFP councillor.
IFP provincial chairman Mntomuhle Khawula confirmed that the councillors had been expelled.
But he referred all further queries to Johnson Mathenjwa, chairman of the national disciplinary committee, who refused to comment.
One of the expelled councillors, Louis Ngwenya, defended his expelled colleagues, saying the move was the result of a succession battle secretly being waged within the party.
He said they would appeal the decision.
