Notwithstanding load shedding, high prices of fuel and groceries, the Durban leg of the Spar/Mercury women's 10km and 5km Women's Challenge run on June 22 looks set for an even bigger entry than that of last year.

As the third race on the five-event calendar after Port Elizabeth and Cape Town and ahead of Pretoria and Johannesburg, it is clearly regarded as the biggest of them all in so far as the Grand Prix is concerned.

This event was launched with great success last year with a R50000 bait for the winner of the series - last year Rene Kalmer walked off with the big prize but will be out of contention this year as she is forced to miss key events because of other commitments - and the Durban challenge boasted its biggest entry in its 18-year history.

About 17000 women faced the starter in the event - the longer 10km for the experienced and the shorter 5km distance for the fun runners, the lame, the sick or the lazy.

There are special age categories to give everyone an equal chance. It was the sheer joy of competing that brought them out in droves and this year, in spite of all the restrictions, it is going to be more of the same. - Sapa
