Treat for lovers of jazz in Joburg

Patience Bambalele

Jazz lovers are in for a treat on Saturday and Sunday when Piano Concerto Live Jazz takes place at Cedar Park in Woodmead, Johannesburg.

The concert features some of the country's best jazz artists such as Paul Hanmer, Themba Mkhize, Wessel van Rensburg and Sylvester Mazinyane.

The inaugural concert is expected to be electrifying, judging by the trio who will be performing without the backing of other instruments or vocals.

Hanmer, who has just released his fourth album Naivasha, is undoubtedly one of country's foremost jazz artists.

Themba Mkhize is one of the best piano players in the country. He has worked with the country's musical crème de la crème, including Hugh Masekela, Sibongile Khumalo and Miriam Makeba, among others.

Van Rensburg is a gifted musician with a host of other talents. He is a great composer, performer and producer.

As a composer, his eclectic style weaves through African, jazz, classical and pop genres and his music can be heard on CDs, films and TV here and abroad.

Talented pianist Sylvester Mazinyane has established himself as an icon in the jazz genre.

Having worked with greats such as Judith Sephuma and Selaelo Selota, among others, he plays a very matured sound.

The Piano Concerto Live Jazz gives local and international pianists a platform to showcase their talents and the public a chance to listen to classy sounds.

Group bookings are available. The package includes meals, wine and Mother's Day gift packs.
