I read with disbelief that Doctor Khumalo, once the darling of Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs, was involved in a car accident while allegedly under the influence of liquor.

I don't want to say Khumalo is an angel, but being a role model, he should know better. He needs to draw the line between good and irresponsible behaviour. A woman was allegedly seriously injured.

When Gift Leremi died in a car accident, Khumalo was one of the people who strongly criticised drinking and driving, yet he committed the same mistake as Leremi.

The question is, for how long are we going to lose people, especially soccer players, to road accidents because they drive drunk?

Leremi, Lesley Manyathela, Meshack Zwane, Cliford Moleko and Fernando Matola all died in car accidents.

Khumalo, of all the people, should have known better that driving under the influence of liquor sends the wrong message and is plain wrong.

My humble plea to South Africans is - if you are drunk, rather sleep over instead of driving and putting yourself and other people at risk. It's senseless.
