Lesotho runners swept the boards in the Nedbank Johannesburg City Marathon senior men, taking all the first three positions in rainy weather yesterday.
Thabo Ntlaloe, 22 - who has applied for South African citizenship - of Mr Price Athletics Club, was the first man to cross the finish line in 2 hours, 20 minutes and 09 seconds.
The Secunda-based Ntlaloe, coached by Frans Chauke, says he plans to build a house for his parents with the R60000 first prize he won.
He surged forward at the 34km mark and never looked back in the race that attracted an estimated 8000 runners, including in the 10km event.
"I'm naturally happy, it's a great achievement. This is my first major marathon victory after the Sasol Marathon last year. I will be taking a short break to recharge my batteries as part of my preparations for the Cape Town Marathon in September.
Nkopane Seqhobane, of Gauteng Striders, had to settle for the second spot in 2:20:11, with Teboho Sello (Mr Price) third in 2:20:19, to complete the Lesotho rout.
Samkeliso Moyo of Zimbabwe also got R60000 after winning the women's marathon in a time of 2:46:35, followed by Dimakatso Menong, who clocked 2:56:37.
Molatelo Malehopo, acting ASA general manager, said: "It was a great show despite the downpour."
