Bree Combined School in Fordsburg, Johannesburg, beat Lulama Primary School 4-1 to win the Gauteng preliminary round of the Danone Nations Cup at Klipspruit Stadium in Soweto on Saturday.
Thirty-two teams arrived in rainy and cold conditions to battle it out with the purpose of reaching the semifinals, which meant automatic qualification to the national finals on May 31.
The winners will take part in the Danone Nations World Cup in France in September.
Until this Danone Nations Cup tournament, little was known about Bree Combined School as soccer was only introduced there three years ago.
"Our school traditionally played cricket as most of the pupils were drawn from the Indian community in Fordsburg," said principal Dave Kalicharran.
"But all that changed five years ago and now most of our pupils come from Soweto."
He said the school was not affiliated to any formal soccer structure. This is all about to change as the local Sasfa region was on hand to witness their great footballing talent and has invited the school to take part in the local regional league.
The four schools that will compete in the Danone Nations Cup national finals are: Bree (Fordsburg), Lulama (Soweto), Phahamong (Evaton) and Thuthuka (Daveyton).
They will join Ndabenhle, Sinamuva, Caluza and Sanzwili from KZN. The final freliminary tournament will take place in Erica Park, Belhar in Cape Town.
