santos still nurse title hopes

The Santos hierarchy is praying and keeping their fingers crossed that Ajax Cape Town and SuperSport United drop points in their remaining games.

This was said by the People's Team's manager Yusuf Gester, who firmly believes that his side stands an outside chance of annexing the lucrative Absa Premiership this season.

"We would love to collect maximum points from our three remaining games and we also hope that Ajax and SuperSport drop points," said Gester.

He added that they were three points behind SuperSport and four behind their neighbours and he believes this will be an interesting season.

Gester, whose side meet Thanda Royal Zulu in their next outing, said they had to focus on that game because it was crucial for them.

"Thanda are in an unenviable position so they are going to come at us. We're in a comfort zone but we're aware that the title is not out of reach like earlier this season when we were happy to be in the top eight berth. So we're also going to fight for that title. We still have to play Ajax and a win in the Cape derby in two weeks' time is now crucial for us. This is football, a very unpredictable sport, and anything can happen.

"If SuperSport drop points, we are right back in it. We just have to make sure that we don't drop any in our remaining games. However, even if we don't win the title, if we finish second, we still qualify for the African Champions League, which is a major motivating factor for us."

Santos play Thanda Royal Zulu away on May 11, Ajax away on May 15 and Platinum Stars at home on May 18.
