Soccer legend Doctor Khumalo has joined the long list of high-profile South Africans on drunk driving charges.
Khumalo is facing negligent, reckless and drunken driving charges after the 41-year-old's BMW collided with a taxi carrying three passengers, one of them a pregnant woman, yesterday morning.
A female passenger in his vehicle was trapped in the wreckage and the jaws of life were used to free her.
Blood was drawn from Khumalo at the accident scene.
Johannesburg Metro police spokesman Inspector Edna Mamonyane said the accident took place on the N1 highway between the Maraisburg and Soweto off-ramps.
Mamonyane said: "Paramedics struggled for some time to free the woman from the BMW. She sustained serious injuries."
All three passengers in the taxi - among them the pregnant woman - was seriously injured, according to Mamonyane.
She said the taxi driver escaped with minor injuries.
Khumalo, his female passenger and the three passengers from the taxi were taken to the Flora Clinic on the West Rand.
When asked if she thought the law was not hard enough on speedsters, Mamonyane said: "Our job is to arrest speedsters and investigate. We have no say about the judgment that is taken."
She said investigations would determine whether Khumalo was speeding or not.
Born in Soweto, Khumalo became a legend playing for Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana. The high point of his soccer career was in the 1990s when he helped Chiefs win three league championship titles and five knockout trophies.
He was also voted South African Footballer of the Year in 1992. He played in 380 league and cup games, scoring 74 goals for Chiefs.
Khumalo is the latest high-profile person to be involved in a drink-related incident. Cricketer Herschelle Gibbs was recently released on R500 bail after he was arrested for allegedly driving drunk in Sea Point, Cape Town.
Gibbs, 34, was detained in the police holding cells for about four hours. He is expected to appear in the Cape Town magistrates' court on June 27.
Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana striker Lerato Chabangu, 22, is out on R1000 bail.
He was caught last Sunday allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and speeding in his Audi A3 in Tembisa, Ekurhuleni.
This was Chabangu's second brush with the law in less than three months. In February he was arrested for speeding in the same Audi A3 on the N1 highway in Johannesburg.
He got off on a legal technicality when he appeared in court two weeks ago.
In February kwaito star Mandoza was involved in an accident in 14th Avenue, Roodepoort, in which two people died.
The police have referred the case to the director of public prosecutions to decide whether or not to prosecute.
