A Thohoyandou police inspector has been arrested and charged with corruption after he allegedly accepted a bribe to release a luxury car from the vehicle identification unit at Makwarela.
Nditsheni Ronald Lidzebe, a police inspector, 50, was granted R5000 bail by Thohoyandou court magistrates Willem Smith and the case was postponed to June 10.
He was not asked to plead.
Thohoyandou police spokesman Mashudu Malelo said Lidzebe allegedly released a Mercedes-Benz believed to have been stolen in Randfontein in February this year.
Two suspects, aged 26 and 28, were arrested when the car was discovered by the police.
The police said the suspects were forced to pay R5000 after a bogus cop allegedly demanded R15000 not not link the investigation to fellow suspects, but later alerted the police.
Malelo said the organised crime unit investigated the matter and caught Lidzebe red-handed receiving the R5000 bribe at a shopping complex.
