The KwaZulu-Natal Taxi Alliance (KZNTA) yesterday said it would, with immediate effect, cancel the licence of a taxi driver and his conductor accused of raping a 22-year-old passenger.
The two men aged 27 and 20 appeared in court yesterday and were both denied bail.
Captain Thembeka Luthuli said the incident took place on Saturday at Durban's Addington Beach.
The 22-year-old woman boarded the taxi on the Berea Road and was travelling to the Point Road area when the incident took place.
She said instead of being dropped off at her destination, the taxi driver drove towards Addington Beach where he and the conductor raped her," said Luthuli.
A vendor reported the crime to Metro police who later arrested the two suspects.
KZNTA spokesman Eugene Hadebe said the driver would be blacklisted and would never be allowed to operate anywhere in the country.
"We condemn such acts of violence against women. Such incidents have no place in any taxi or area where there are passengers. We will petition the courts not to grant bail to these individuals."
Hadebe said he had brought the matter to the attention of KwaZulu-Natal transport and safety and security MEC Bheki Cele to ensure that such cases received the highest priority from the police as well.
