A pensioner was hacked to death by a young man in what police described as a "ruthless" attack.

The incident happened on Monday night in the village of Mninginisi outside Giyani in Limpopo.

Superintendent Moatshe Ngoepe yesterday identified the dead man as Risimati Julius Chauke, 72 .

He said Chauke's neighbours heard screams from his house at about 7pm and went to investigate.

When they entered the house they saw a man who allegedly lives in the neighbourhood fleeing with a sharp object in his hands.

They found the pensioner lying in a pool of blood in his bedroom.

Ngoepe said the victim was rushed to the nearby Nkhensani Hospital but was certified dead on arrival.

"The victim was hacked several times on his head and arms," Ngoepe said.

"He was seriously injured and we suspect he might have died as a result of the injuries."

He said the motive for the attack had not been established because they have not arrested the suspect.

"It is strange that such a young man attacked an old man in this way," he said. "We hope our investigations will reveal the reason for the attack."

He said the community should come forward with information about the attacker.
