Blouberg municipal employees were yesterday racing against the clock to meet the deadline a high court gave the municipality to rebuild the shacks they destroyed.

"I am afraid they will have to go to jail or pay a fine because they failed to comply with the court order," SA Civic Organisation chairman Wilson Hlaku said..

Hlaku said the court gave the municipality until yesterday to rebuild the shacks or face a jail sentence of 60 days or a fine of R25000.

Only 64 of the 67 shacks were built by noon yesterday to meet the court deadline set for the Blouberg municipality in Limpopo.

Thirty-one of the shacks allegedly had no roofs and windowpanes and half of them had no doors and the floors were not cemented.

At the time of going to press the municipality was struggling to finish the three remaining shacks.

Municipal manager Isaac Makhura said they hoped to finish the job by yesterday, but Hlaku saidresidents were not happy with the size of the shacks and that they wanted more of them.
